Thursday Word Day: Pagophagia

Happy #ThursdayWordDay, word nerds!

When I was a little girl, my mother would chew ice. Chew it. Not let it sit on her tongue because it was a hot and humid Alabama day, but crunch it for hours on end, even in winter.

It was pretty weird. Thank goodness the habit died down and I haven't seen her do it in a really long time. Now, some 15+ years later, I finally know what was causing the ice-chewing thanks to Vickie Franks of the Uncommon Artistic Endeavors blog!

"Pagophagia: noun. the compulsive eating of ice that is a common symptom of a lack of iron." Who knew!

Vickie is a nurse, so I had to go to a medical dictionary for that one. If you're not inclined to chew ice, you should make some of her recipes and eat those instead. They look pretty tasty! (And much more appetizing than ice.)

Know a funky vocab word? Share it in the comments below along with a link to your blog and I'll give you a shoutout on a future Thursday Word Day!
